A defining week has dawned in American politics with huge implications for Donald Trump’s second presidency, for his fellow Republicans and for a Democratic Party seeking to build a new future from the ashes of its 2024 election humiliation.

Coastal communities wake to flooding risk as Hurricane Erin barrels north

Hurricane Erin remains a Category 2 storm, roving northeast parallel to the East Coast.

While it’s not expected to make landfall, the storm is bringing high seawater levels that could significantly flood coastal areas at high tide — which is forecast between 6-7 a.m. Thursday, just after the National Hurricane Center reported Erin was starting to move away from North Carolina’s coast.

Here’s what to know:

Outer Banks at risk: Residents are particularly vulnerable in North Carolina’s Outer Banks — narrow barrier islands where houses have collapsed in recent years. Authorities urged residents to evacuate ahead of Erin. Several sea turtle nests in the region were damaged, but conservationists are racing to protect them.

Beaches lashed: East Coast beaches are shutting down swimming as Erin churns up dangerous waves and rip currents. New York has banned swimming at Long Island and New York City beaches, while beaches in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia are under similar restrictions. But at Virginia Beach, surfers are reveling in the “insane” waves despite losing a day this week’s annual surf championship.

Cruise disruptions: Erin is forcing cruise lines to reroute ships, leaving passengers frustrated but breathing a sigh of relief to avoid the storm’s path. “It is disappointing because we wanted to be in Bermuda, but I see the hurricane is heading right there,” a passenger aboard Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas, which was rerouted to Florida, told CNN affiliate WESH

Erin remains a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, a slight downtick from late Wednesday, but the reach of its powerful winds expanded overnight.

Tropical-storm-force winds now extend up to 320 miles from the hurricane’s center, up from 265 miles as of late Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Tropical storm conditions have now reached parts of North Carolina’s Outer Banks and “will spread northward along the Virginia coastline” Thursday morning, the NHC said.

Erin was just over 200 miles east-southeast from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, as of 5 a.m. ET Thursday. The hurricane was “just beginning to move away from the North Carolina coast,” the NHC said.

The massive hurricane is roving north, roughly tracking alongside the US East Coast, much of which is under threat of deadly rip currents and трипскан сайт dangerous surf conditions.

The hurricane is expected to weaken in the coming days and become post-tropical Saturday, the NHC said.

Pristine, crisp and all-white — tennis whites have been a tradition dating back centuries. The distinctive look has not only made the racquet sport stand out, it has also become a sartorial mainstay off the courts, too.

And even though most of the major tournaments have done away with the hueless uniformity, Wimbledon, the very first of them, has remained strict in its policy (as have many private clubs around the world). The prestigious championship even clamped down on the rule more than a decade ago, prohibiting colorful accents that had become increasingly common — the year after Roger Federer’s now-infamous pair of orange-soled sneakers were banned after his first round in 2013.

The rules once called for “predominantly white” outfits, allowing some competitors to play with color combinations, such as Serena Williams’ tribute to Wimbledon treat strawberries and cream in 2010. But the crackdown changed the wording to “almost entirely white,” per the organizers: no off-white, no panels of color, no varying colorways on sneakers. The only recent loosening of rules was in 2023, to allow women to wear dark-colored shorts on the court following criticisms that the rules weren’t accommodating for трип скан menstruation leaks.

But why did tennis whites become the standard? The reasons often cited are practical ones, from heat reflection to sweat-masking. Of course, tennis style has drastically changed in a century-and-a-half since it first became a recreational sensation for the upper class, hot off the heels of croquet (and utilizing the same neatly trimmed lawns). Early tennis attire was more akin to 19th-century leisurewear: women wore striped and patterned garments with long skirts, corseting and wide-brimmed hats; men donned wool pants, button-downs or sweaters.

Because spectators and players have often adhered to similar styles, fashion and tennis have had a “mutual exchange over time, where various tennis trends have seeped into wider culture as well,” said sports journalist Ben Rothenberg, author of “Tennis: The Stylish Life” as well as a recent biography on Naomi Osaka.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth did not inform the White House before he authorized a pause on weapons shipments to Ukraine last week, according to five sources familiar with the matter, setting off a scramble inside the administration to understand why the halt was implemented and explain it to Congress and the Ukrainian government.

President Donald Trump suggested on Tuesday that he was not responsible for the move. Asked on Tuesday during a Cabinet meeting whether he approved of the pause in shipments, Trump demurred, saying only that the US would continue to send defensive weapons to Ukraine. Pressed again on who authorized the pause, Trump replied, “I don’t know, why don’t you tell me?”

The episode underscores the often-haphazard policy-making process inside the Trump administration, particularly under Hegseth at the Defense Department. The pause was the second time this year that Hegseth had decided to halt the flow of US weapons to Ukraine, catching senior national security officials off guard, sources said.

It first happened in February and the decision was quickly reversed, three of the sources said — mirroring what happened on Monday night, when Trump announced that the weapons shipments would continue despite Hegseth signing off on the pause.

The US special envoy to Ukraine, tripskan Ret. Gen. Keith Kellogg, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is also Trump’s national security adviser, were also not told about the pause beforehand and learned about it from press reports, according to a senior administration official and two of the sources.

Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson told CNN in a statement that said in part, “Secretary Hegseth provided a framework for the President to evaluate military aid shipments and assess existing stockpiles. This effort was coordinated across government.”

After taking off from Brisbane just after dawn, our tiny propeller plane skims miles of Queensland coastline before heading north out over the crystal-clear waters of the Coral Sea –— revealing the beauty of this vast reef system beneath its surface.

Our destination is Lady Elliot Island, a remote coral cay perched on top of the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef.

Pilot Peter Gash is the island’s leaseholder, and his family has been operating tours to the island for nearly 20 years.

“We made it our life’s work,” Gash said. “My wife and I married, I went and learned to fly airplanes so I could bring people here.”

Gash negotiates his small aircraft through bumpy crosswinds to land safely on the short, grass-covered runway.

Decades ago, the island tripscan войти was a barren landscape devoid of vegetation following years of mining for nutrient-rich seabird waste — known as guano — in the late 1800s.

The Gash family set about bringing this island back to life, planting around 10,000 native species of trees to create a man-made forest and nature reserve, and using solar power, batteries and a water desalination system to support a small eco-tourism resort.

The island is now home to up to 200,000 sea birds, which have helped to regenerate the coral reef fringing the island.

“If we can recover this small place, this little circle, we can recover this big place — this whole planet,” Gash said. “That’s what really drives me, is to try and encourage people to know that it’s not hopeless, it can be done.”

Gash takes CNN on a snorkel tour, diving down to explore the underwater rainforest in his backyard. The vibrant coral colonies burst with color and teem with hundreds of species including manta rays, reef sharks, clown fish and turtles.

When the island’s greatest enthusiast resurfaces to draw a breath, even he can’t hide his shock at the extent of the coral bleaching.

“It’s worse than I thought it would be,” Gash said, as he treaded water on the surface. “I just pray the corals will come back next year.”

‘Silent as a graveyard’

Beyond the Great Barrier Reef, the massive marine heatwave sweeping the globe has already impacted some of the world’s most famous coral reefs — including those in the Red Sea, Indonesia and the Seychelles.

Last year, the soaring ocean temperatures also caused widespread destruction of corals in the Caribbean and Florida — and US experts are predicting further damage there this coming summer.

“I am becoming increasingly concerned about the 2024 summer for the wider Caribbean and Florida,” said Derek Manzello, the coordinator for NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch program.

“It won’t take much additional seasonal warming to push temperatures past the bleaching threshold.”
